By incorporating on-chip multiplication gain, the electron multiplying CCD achieves, in an all solid-state sensor, the single-photon detection sensitivity typical of intensified or electron-bombarded CCDs at much lower cost and without compromising the quantum efficiency and resolution characteristics of the conventional CCD structure.
The digital video sequences presented in this section visualize the dynamic activity of mitochondria and endosomes. The mitochondria were tagged with the green fluorescent protein mEmerald fused to a mitochondrial targeting signal. Endosomes were targeted with the red fluorescent protein mCherry fused to Rab7a, a late endosomal marker. Studies have revealed some of the proteins and genes with which Rab7a interacts, including RILP and CHM. Moreover, research indicates that Rab7a defects are associated with hereditary sensory neuropathy type 1C, also referred to as Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome type 2B.
