Mitochondria in animal cells and chloroplasts in plant cells are responsible for changing energy from one form to another. Mitochondria invoke the use of oxygen to extract energy from fats and sugars in order to create molecules of ATP. In plants, energy production occurs in chloroplasts through photosynthesis with the help of carbon dioxide and water. Mitochondria and chloroplasts alike contain their own DNA, separate from the cells in which they reside. These organelles use the ribosomes in the cell's cytoplasm in addition to the ribosomes within their own structures to make their respective membrane proteins. The digital video above displays normal fibroblast lung cells (FoLu line) from the Gray fox expressing monomeric green fluorescent protein (mEGFP) that has been fused to the mitochondrial targeting signal from subunit VIII of human cytochrome C oxidase.
