The units responsible for structural support and cellular transport are the microtubules. Microtubules are tiny tubes that are 25 nanometers in diameter and essential to the cytoskeletal structure that gives the cell its form and shape. These versatile organelles also act as conveyer belts moving enzymes and other organelles throughout the cytoplasm. The construction of cilia, flagella, and spindle fibers associated with cell division (mitosis) are all dependent on microtubules. Microtubules change shape and size according to the needs of the cell and its life cycle. The digital video above illustrates the tracking of microtubule +TIPs (plus end tracking proteins) in human cervical carcinoma (HeLa line) epithelial cells labeled with a chimera of EB3 fused to mEGFP.
