EMCCDs Article Electron Multiplying Charge-Coupled Devices (EMCCDs)

By incorporating on-chip multiplication gain, the electron multiplying CCD achieves, in an all solid-state sensor, the single-photon detection sensitivity typical of intensified or electron-bombarded CCDs at much lower cost and without compromising the quantum efficiency and resolution characteristics of the conventional CCD structure.

Visualizing the Interplay Between Mitochondrial and Tubulin Dynamics

The digital videos presented in this section illustrate the interplay between mitochondria (labeled with DsRed fluorescent protein) and the microtubules by examining the tracking of microtubule +TIPs (plus end tracking proteins) labeled with EB3 fused to the popular tracking probe, mEGFP. The length of microtubules in the cell varies between 200 nanometers and 25 micrometers, depending upon the task of a particular microtubule and the state of the cell's life cycle. Microtubules are believed to act as a transport mechanism for mitochondria. EB3 is a protein that binds to the plus-ends of microtubules and can be visualized tracking through the cytoplasm.

Video 1 - Run Time: 20 Seconds - DsRed-labeled mitochondria are visible moving along the microtubule network, highlighted with EGFP tagged EB3. Choose a playback version: Streaming Video (4.8 MB), Progressive Download (4.8 MB), and MPEG Download (71.8 MB)

Video 2 - Run Time: 6 Seconds - A concentrated group of mitochondria is grouped along a dense section of the microtubulue network. Choose a playback version: Streaming Video (1.7 MB), Progressive Download (1.7 MB), and MPEG Download (71.6 MB)

Video 3 - Run Time: 15 Seconds - Highly mobile mitochondria are visible moving along the microtubules in a FoLu cell. Choose a playback version: Streaming Video (2.9 MB), Progressive Download (2.9 MB), and MPEG Download (71.1 MB)

Video 4 - Run Time: 30 Seconds - Scattered individual mitochondria are visible traversing the microtubules in a FoLu cell Choose a playback version: Streaming Video (5.8 MB), Progressive Download (5.8 MB), and MPEG Download (71.1 MB)
